The latest TikTok trend captivating tweens and teens is far from innocent fun; it’s called “devious licks,” and it’s leading to rampant theft and vandalism in schools across the country. Instead of showcasing creative dance moves or humorous skits, this challenge encourages participants to steal or damage school property and flaunt their antics on TikTok. Fortunately, the platform is taking action by banning related videos to curb participation, but the damage done in many schools is already significant.
Urban Dictionary defines a “lick” as a successful theft that yields a rewarding outcome for the thief. Reports indicate that a TikTok user named “jugg4elias” sparked the trend by posting a video of a pack of disposable masks they claimed to have stolen from school. The caption read, “A month into school… absolutely devious lick. Should’ve brought a mask from home. Now look at you walkin round campus maskless you dirty dog.” This video garnered over 345,800 views before it was removed, but by then, the trend had already gained traction.
School officials are urging students to halt this foolish behavior. Sun Lake High School in Land O’Lakes, Florida, issued a statement pleading with students and parents to stop. They reported thefts of items like soap dispensers, exit signs, and classroom telephones. “We love our Seahawks and we do not want to see any of them arrested so PLEASE talk to your kids,” they wrote. “If they are participating in this activity, you will be hearing from an administrator and our School Resource Officer. Let’s work together to put a stop to this now.”
In another alarming incident, a student boasted about stealing COVID-19 tests, declaring, “I won this trend,” while revealing rapid antigen tests in their backpack. Such incidents are becoming all too common, with reports of similar thefts flooding in from schools across America.
My own child’s high school is not exempt from this trend. She texted me that the bathrooms are in disarray, with stall doors missing locks, paper towels and toilet paper stolen or stuffed into toilets, and soap dispensers gone. Rumors even circulated that the principal’s car had its tires stolen. It’s clear that this challenge has spiraled out of control.
In response, TikTok is actively removing content related to this trend and urging users to “be kind to your schools & teachers.”
To the kids participating in this challenge: we’ve seen craziness like the Tide Pod challenge before, and we thought you had learned from it. Please stop damaging and stealing from your schools. This behavior is not only disrespectful but could also land you in serious legal trouble. With everything else going on this year, we don’t need to add school vandalism to the list.
