While Boomers might label Millennials as “lazy” or “entitled,” we often feel justified in our complaints about issues like climate change and economic insecurity. The notion that we are “spoiled” because we advocate for equal rights and fair treatment for all is simply misguided. Many Millennials are struggling to find stable employment, often living in their parents’ basements due to overwhelming debt and soaring housing costs. Specifically, Boomers scored notably high in “defensiveness,” which is characterized by an inability to accept feedback and a tendency to react negatively to criticism.
For example, when we suggest that our parents reconsider their oversized vehicles or their beliefs in conspiracy theories, they often respond with anger rather than reflection. This defensiveness can lead to persistent acceptance of harmful narratives, including misconceptions about immigration and race.
Willfulness and Tolerance
Moreover, the study revealed that Boomers demonstrated a higher degree of “willfulness,” or the inclination to impose their opinions on others. This often manifests in a lack of tolerance for differing viewpoints, creating friction in conversations about social issues. While Millennials are generally more accepting of diverse lifestyles, Boomers often express judgment, which can hinder progress in societal norms.
In contrast to the Boomers’ self-perception, Millennials frequently face barriers in the job market, with many employers still biased against visible tattoos and piercings, suggesting that outdated opinions are impacting opportunities.

Despite the generational divide, it’s essential to recognize the complex factors that contribute to these behaviors. While older generations may become less narcissistic with age, significant changes are still needed to address the issues that plague our society today.
