3.3 Million Boppy Baby Loungers Recalled Following 8 Infant Fatalities

Adler. “Loungers and pillow-like products pose a suffocation risk for infants. Given that infants sleep frequently – even in items not designed for such use – these Boppy loungers are simply too dangerous to remain available.”

This recall follows previous warnings from the CPSC advising parents against allowing infants to sleep on lounger pillows. A Boppy representative expressed their devastation over the tragedies, noting, “The lounger was not intended as a sleep product and carries warnings against unsupervised use.”

The recall includes all Boppy Newborn Loungers, comprising three models: the Original Newborn Lounger, Preferred Newborn Lounger, and Pottery Barn Kids Newborn Lounger. Available since 2004, they were sold for prices ranging from $30 to $44 at various retailers including Amazon, Pottery Barn Kids, Target, and Walmart. Boppy urges parents to cease using the loungers immediately and to reach out for a refund.

In light of these incidents, the CPSC has approved a new regulation set to take effect in 2022, which will prohibit specific types of infant sleep products. According to advocacy group Kids in Danger, “Currently, too many products that seem suitable for sleep do not create a safe environment.” The American Academy of Pediatrics emphasizes that infants should sleep only on firm, flat surfaces, free from bedding, padding, bumpers, or restraints.
