A Weekend Away Was Just What I Needed to Overcome My Mom Burnout

After binge-watching a few episodes of “What If” on Disney Plus — the latest Marvel series that offers a fresh twist on beloved moments from the Marvel Cinematic Universe — I found myself pondering a few “What If” scenarios of my own. What if mothers decided to change the narrative in their homes? What if, instead of the kids running off, WE got the chance to run away for a bit?

What if I took a weekend off to indulge in TV time without interruptions? What if I booked a hotel room just for myself, to catch up on my favorite shows and enjoy some well-deserved solitude, free from my kid’s constant interruptions? Would the investment be worthwhile? Would the post-weekend chaos be manageable? The only way to know was to take the plunge — so I did!

I took a break from the daily grind and spent an entire weekend alone at a hotel. I packed my favorite snacks and enjoyed endless hours of television. Why? Because I absolutely deserved it! And honestly, I believe all moms should treat themselves to at least one weekend away every year, if not one every month.

So here’s your reminder, fellow mom: please, take a breather! Spend some time alone, away from those sweet but demanding little ones and possibly an equally lovable (but still needy) partner. It may sound silly to pay for a little peace and quiet, but can you really put a price on such bliss?

Imagine a whole weekend of tranquility, just you and your shows, snacking without anyone hovering nearby, waiting to grab a bite! Picture waking up at 9 a.m. — yes, I said 9 — flipping your pillow to the cool side, and curling up for another hour of blissful sleep without anyone pleading for breakfast.

I want that for you! But I know many of you might be rolling your eyes at the thought of leaving your family behind, worrying about what kind of mess awaits when you return. I was skeptical too! This brilliant idea didn’t just pop into my head because of Marvel’s series; it was inspired by a friend, Jamie, another mom who unapologetically escapes for a weekend retreat every few months.

Jamie reminded me that taking a weekend for myself was not only okay but essential. And you know what? She was spot on. My weekend turned out to be incredible! I ordered takeout, lounged in bed, binge-watched Netflix’s “Clickbait” after catching up on “What If,” and relished the peace and quiet.

By the time the weekend was done, I was thrilled to return home to my daughter. Okay, she’s nine and cringes when I call her “my baby,” but you get the idea! That mini getaway replenished my energy, making me ready to tackle our first week back to in-person school after a year and a half of virtual learning. I woke up easily the next morning, with no bitterness about the end of my leisurely naps.

So if you’ve been looking for a sign to take a break, here it is! Treat yourself to a weekend off, free from the demands of laundry, dishes, or any work obligations. Leave those responsibilities at home with the family, and don’t forget to leave the “mom guilt” behind too — it’s not welcome where you’re headed!

After the challenging years we’ve faced, where we’ve been treading lightly and worried about our safety, it’s time to reclaim our joy. Just remember to do so safely, with masks and disinfectants in tow, because the pandemic is still a reality we must navigate.

So go ahead! Start planning your escape, and don’t look back!
