In a recent announcement from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Boppy, a household name among parents, is recalling over 3 million of its baby loungers linked to the tragic deaths of at least eight infants. The recall encompasses all Boppy Newborn Loungers, available in three models: the Original Newborn Lounger, the Preferred Newborn Lounger, and the Pottery Barn Kids Newborn Lounger. These loungers were sold from 2004 onwards at various retailers, including Amazon, Pottery Barn Kids, Target, and Walmart, priced between $30 and $44. Parents are urged to stop using the loungers immediately and to reach out for a refund. Amazon has begun notifying customers who purchased the product.
In light of these incidents, the CPSC has approved a new regulation set to take effect in 2022, which will ban certain types of infant sleep products. “Currently, an excessive number of products on the market can seem suitable for sleep yet fail to provide a safe environment,” noted the advocacy group Kids in Danger. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises that babies should only sleep on their backs on firm, flat surfaces without any bedding, padding, bumpers, or restraints.
