Anderson Cooper has made it clear that his son Wyatt Morgan Cooper will not be handed a lavish inheritance when he grows up. While many might assume that the celebrated CNN anchor has a vast fortune—estimated at around $200 million—Cooper believes in the value of hard work and independence.
In a recent episode of Air Mail’s Morning Meeting podcast, Cooper shared, “I don’t believe in passing on large sums of money. I have no idea what I’ll have in the future, but I’m not focused on wealth. I don’t plan to leave my son a treasure trove. My parents’ philosophy was that college expenses would be covered, and then it’s up to you to forge your own path.”
Wyatt, still a toddler, may enjoy a privileged lifestyle now, including playdates with celebrities like Andy Cohen, but Cooper is determined that he will learn the importance of earning his keep. This perspective mirrors that of his late mother, Gloria Vanderbilt, who also believed in financial independence. Before Wyatt was born, Cooper had told Howard Stern that his mother had made it clear he would not receive a trust fund. “I think inheriting money is a curse… If I thought there was a pot of gold waiting for me, I might not have been as driven.”
Interestingly, when Vanderbilt passed away, she left Cooper her entire estate, valued at $1.5 million—substantially less than the wealth she was once thought to possess.
