6 Ways My Flaws Prepared Me for Parenthood

As any experienced parent will tell you, there’s no real way to get ready for the journey of parenthood. You might find yourself buried in parenting books, engaging in every online forum, or collecting pamphlets from your doctor’s office. While these resources can be helpful, they won’t prepare you for the chaotic moments—like when your child suddenly throws up on you and you scramble to find the carpet cleaner, only to be greeted by an unexpected diaper disaster.

Even the most prepared individuals, like the Boy Scouts, can’t equip you for the unpredictable nature of parenting. However, reflecting on my past habits and shortcomings, I realize they have, in some ways, eased my transition into motherhood. Here’s a look at how my personal challenges have surprisingly set the stage for my parenting journey.

1. Housekeeping Skills Leave Much to Be Desired

While I don’t live in a pigsty, I wouldn’t qualify as a meticulous housekeeper either. How often do I really need to vacuum? And as for laundry, I’m quite content with a “clean” pile on the couch paired with a “dirty” one near the washer. This lack of housekeeping finesse has made me quite adaptable to the inevitable messes that come with children. After all, I’ve seen my fair share of clutter before kids, so it’s business as usual now.

2. Sleep? What’s That?

I haven’t had a decent night’s sleep in years—long before my children arrived. Stressors like work and social obligations kept me awake even during the Clinton era. While I may not have all the answers for those tricky parenting moments—like explaining why my son thinks tampons make good lightsabers—my past flaws have equipped me for this wild ride called motherhood.
