Remember when Gwyneth Paltrow naming her daughter Apple was considered outrageous? Hard to believe that was 17 years ago! Since then, baby names have taken a turn for the bizarre. The pinnacle of this naming trend? X Æ A-12, pronounced X Ash A Twelve, the son of Elon Musk. That topic could fill an entire discussion!
As society progresses, so does the creativity in naming children. According to a recent article on Nameberry, the trend of unique baby names is here to stay, with 2022 expected to showcase some fascinating categories: Escapist names, those ending in S, and names inspired by characters from Bridgerton, among others.
I must admit, I enjoy exploring baby names. While diving into these lists, I stumbled upon some favorites. Yet, I was surprised by the trend of naming babies “Baby.” Yes, you read that right! It’s playful and brings a smile, but will it still sound charming once they outgrow their toddler years? Apparently, this trend isn’t new. For instance, model Jessica Hart named her daughter Baby-Rae in late 2020, while her friend Sasha Benz named her daughter Baybi-Blue back in 2018. Clearly, “Baby” and its variations are making waves.
What’s in a Name?
But what drives people to choose such unusual names? Every parent has their reasons. Some names honor family heritage (one of my brothers carries a Roman numeral IV in his name), while others have deep cultural significance. Ultimately, there’s no right or wrong way to name your child, as they belong to you. However, it’s essential to consider how their name might affect them as they grow into adulthood.
For instance, job applicants often face assumptions based on their names, which can lead to biases regarding race or gender. While this form of discrimination is illegal under the Civil Rights Act, it still occurs.
Unique Baby Names Don’t Have to Be Absurd
Future parents, take note! What’s trendy today may not resonate with your child later on. I’m looking at you, Kim Kardashian! “Baby” doesn’t seem so strange compared to North, Saint, Chicago, and Psalm, does it? In an era where individuality is celebrated, there is room for creativity (though maybe not to the extreme). Whatever you choose, remember your child will carry their name for many years to come. Who knows, we might see more Dr. Babys in the future (after all, there’s a Dr. Marijuana Pepsi Vandyck). If that’s the craziest we’re dealing with in 2040, I won’t complain!
