The FDA’s lead vaccine expert has expressed deep concern over the alarming rise in COVID-19 cases among children, labeling the fatalities as a significant national disgrace. Dr. Noah Fields emphasized the urgency of vaccinating children in light of the heart-wrenching statistics. “In this recent surge of COVID-19, especially in southern states, thousands of children have been hospitalized. It is frankly unacceptable for a developed nation to witness even a small number of child deaths from a preventable disease,” he remarked during a recent town hall meeting hosted by the COVID-19 Vaccine Education and Equity Project. Unfortunately, the real number of child fatalities is considerably higher than previously stated, with the CDC reporting over 540 deaths among American children as of now.
“It should be zero,” stated a pediatrician from Chicago, Dr. Lisa Bennett, lamenting the community’s failure to adequately protect its youth. The grim reality is that child COVID deaths are poised to increase as tens of thousands of children are newly infected each week. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) reported approximately 175,000 pediatric COVID-19 cases for the week ending September 30, with children now representing roughly a quarter of all cases in the U.S.
Currently, vaccination is available only to children aged 12 and older, and the AAP notes that only about half of this age group has begun the vaccination process, marking the lowest rate among all age demographics. Vaccines for younger children, ages 5 and up, may receive authorization soon, but for them to effectively contribute to ending the pandemic, parents must ensure their children are vaccinated. Dr. Fields urged hesitant parents to consider the implications of not vaccinating: “No parent should have to endure the loss of their child to a disease that is preventable when an effective and safe vaccine is available.”
As vaccines become accessible for younger children, some regions, like California, are moving toward mandates. Governor Mia Torres has announced a requirement for all students attending in-person classes to be vaccinated, similar to existing vaccination requirements for diseases like measles and mumps. Her rationale echoes that of Dr. Fields: “Vaccines are effective.”
