The highly anticipated trailer for Disney+’s reboot of the beloved holiday classic, titled Home Sweet Home Alone, has finally arrived. For years, Home Alone has been my go-to film during the festive season, a tradition that kicks off around December 1st to herald the arrival of the holiday spirit. So, when I learned that Disney+ was breathing new life into this cherished film, my curiosity was piqued. I’m all ears…
“Twas the night before Christmas break, and the joy was palpable. The family set off for their vacation, but forgot one tiny detail…” the trailer kicks off.
Home Sweet Home Alone adopts the familiar premise (a child left at home while the family jets off for the holidays), but with a twist: the young protagonist is British (not from Chicago), the vacation spot is Tokyo (rather than Paris), and the burglars are the charming Ellie Kemper and Rob Delaney instead of the iconic Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern.
Is it just like the Home Alone you remember? Not quite. Will the British accents be a bit jarring? Perhaps, but I’m here for it. Am I excited to binge this film when it lands on Disney+? Absolutely yes.
While nothing can quite replace the comedic genius of Pesci as the clumsy yet menacing burglar, Kemper and Delaney bring their own brand of humor as a husband-and-wife team trying to reclaim a valuable heirloom. “I can’t go to jail, honey. I wouldn’t survive 30 seconds in general population. That’s where fresh fish get got,” Delaney’s character laments, to which Kemper retorts, “Nobody here is getting got!”
Archie Yates takes center stage as the clever Max Mercer, who—unlike Macaulay Culkin’s Kevin McCallister—is fully prepared for the home invasion when his parents head off to Japan without him. Aisling Bea portrays Mercer’s mom, channeling Catherine O’Hara’s spirit as she desperately pleads with the airline staff to bring her back home. The cast also features Kenan Thompson, Tim Simons, Pete Holmes, Devin Ratray, Ally Maki, and Chris Parnell.
For those scoffing at the idea of rebooting Home Alone, it’s worth noting that there are five (yes, five!) entries in the franchise. This reboot was destined to happen, even if many fans lost interest after the second installment (Home Alone: Lost In New York), when Culkin departed the series.
As a nod to the original film, mean cousin Buzz McCallister (played by Devin Ratray) makes a return as a police officer.
Home Sweet Home Alone premieres on November 12, 2021, exclusively on Disney+.
