A recent study published in the journal Pediatrics indicated that training supervisors to be more understanding of their employees’ family lives can lead to significant improvements at home. The workplace program, known as Support-Transform-Achieve-Results (STAR), promoted a culture of mutual support among colleagues and offered employees greater control over their schedules.
The outcome? Parents reported spending an average of 39 additional minutes a day with their children after a year. “Our findings demonstrate that modifying work practices can positively influence family dynamics,” says research assistant Jamie Thompson. “The study is based on the work-home resource model, which suggests that work pressures can drain parents’ time and energy, negatively impacting family life. However, enhancing work resources can bolster the energy parents can bring into their family roles.”
Interestingly, this boost in family time didn’t necessitate taking more time off work; there was no significant change in working hours for either mothers or fathers. Instead, parents felt more energized to engage with their children.
Creating a more supportive work environment could result in less stress for parents.
