The highly anticipated first official trailer for Scream, the fifth entry in the iconic horror series, has been released. If the phrase “Do you like scary movies?” has given you goosebumps for nearly 25 years, you’re in for a thrill. Ghostface is back in Woodsboro, ready to deliver chills and gore once again.
Fans have been buzzing with excitement about the upcoming film, which is set to premiere in theaters on January 14. The return of series star Neve Campbell was confirmed last year, alongside the much-loved Courteney Cox and David Arquette. Even though the absence of director Wes Craven is keenly felt, original screenwriter Kevin Williamson’s involvement as an executive producer, along with the return of several original Ghostface survivors, promises to satisfy both new and long-time fans.
Newcomers to the cast, including Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, Jack Quaid, Mason Gooding, and others, are expected to add fresh dynamics while keeping with the franchise’s tradition of introducing a diverse ensemble. In the trailer, Ortega appears to be the first victim of Ghostface, showcasing a scene where she answers her landline only to have the killer manipulate her smart home technology. Because, after all, it’s 2021.
Campbell’s character, Sidney Prescott, receives the dreaded call announcing yet another killer is on the loose. When Arquette’s Dewey Riley inquires if she’s armed, she confidently replies, “I’m Sidney Prescott, of course I have a gun.” That’s the spirit!
While the trailer keeps many details under wraps, including the identity of the killer and the potential body count, it does tease some nostalgic elements, such as the return of Stu’s party house and several Easter eggs for devoted fans. Director Tyler Gillett has expressed the importance of maintaining secrecy, even to the cast, to enhance the whodunit experience.
As the countdown to January continues, fans are left on the edge of their seats, wondering about the fate of their beloved characters. Until then, it might be wise to double-check those locks and perhaps even disconnect your landline for safety.
