The trailer for the fresh take on the beloved holiday classic, titled Home Sweet Home Alone, has finally arrived. For years, the original Home Alone has been my go-to movie during the festive season, and the news of its reboot on Disney+ has certainly piqued my interest. Count me in…

The trailer opens with, “Twas the night before Christmas vacation and the excitement was palpable. The family was ready for their holiday getaway, but they forgot one crucial detail…” Home Sweet Home Alone retains the core premise (a child left behind during the holidays while the rest of the family travels), but this time the young protagonist is British (instead of a Chicagoan), the vacation spot is Tokyo (not Paris), and the comedic burglars are the charming Ellie Kemper and Rob Delaney (instead of the menacing duo of Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern).

Does it resemble the Home Alone you cherished? Not entirely. Will the British accents catch you off guard? Perhaps, but I’m embracing it. Will I binge-watch this movie when it debuts on Disney+? Absolutely.

While it’s hard to imagine Home Alone without the iconic Pesci as the clumsy yet intimidating burglar, Kemper and Delaney bring their own comedic flair as a husband-and-wife duo attempting to reclaim a priceless heirloom. “I can’t go to jail, darling. I wouldn’t last a minute in general population. That’s where fresh fish get got,” Delaney’s lovable burglar exclaims, to which Kemper responds, through clenched teeth, “Nobody here is getting got!”

Archie Yates plays the clever Max Mercer, who, unlike Macaulay Culkin’s Kevin McCallister, is fully prepared for the home invasion when his parents head off to Japan without him. Aisling Bea portrays Mercer’s mom, channeling Catherine O’Hara’s essence as she desperately pleads with the airline representative to get her back home. The cast also features Kenan Thompson, Tim Simons, Pete Holmes, Devin Ratray, Ally Maki, and Chris Parnell.

To those grumbling about the necessity of rebooting Home Alone, well, actually there are five (yes, five!) films in the Home Alone franchise. This reboot was destined to happen, even though many fans lost interest after the second film (Home Alone: Lost In New York), which marked Culkin’s departure from the series.

However, there’s a nod to the original, with the notorious cousin Buzz McCallister (played by Devin Ratray) returning as a police officer.

Home Sweet Home Alone will be available for streaming on November 12, 2021, exclusively on Disney+.
