If you have a child in their preteen or teenage years, they are likely enamored with TikTok, or at least their friends are! Recently, I had a discussion with my eight-year-old about possibly starting a TikTok account for her.
On one hand, I’m thrilled she’s picking up new dance moves and connecting with friends who share her interests. It reminds me of my own childhood when I felt left out of conversations about shows I couldn’t watch because we didn’t have cable. That sense of exclusion is something I want to shield my daughter from. The nostalgia makes me genuinely happy for her to have these shared experiences. (By the way, does anyone even say “genuinely” anymore?)
Yet, the protective mom in me is uneasy at the idea of her learning TikTok dances, as I worry about the content she might encounter along the way. Social media can be overwhelming for kids, and some TikTok trends are definitely not suited for young audiences. While I appreciate her exploration, I’m not ready for her to have full access just yet. This is why I’m relieved to hear about an app that serves as a kid-friendly alternative to TikTok called Zigazoo.
