Teacher burnout has become a pressing issue, exacerbated by the challenges posed by the pandemic. Educators have faced immense pressure, from rapidly transitioning to online learning in 2020 to returning to classrooms without adequate protection and navigating political controversies surrounding safety measures. It’s no surprise that burnout rates have soared.
In response, two school districts in Virginia are implementing an innovative solution: they will dismiss students early on select Wednesdays to provide teachers with additional time off. The Virginia Beach City Public School board recently voted 9-1 to release students two hours early on seven Wednesdays over the upcoming three months. This initiative aims to give teachers uninterrupted time to prepare lessons without the burden of after-hours work.
“Our teachers are being asked to do more than ever, covering cafeterias, hallways, and their colleagues’ classrooms,” said Superintendent Alex Turner. “This early dismissal allows them the time they need to prepare for instruction.”
Suffolk Public Schools has also adopted a similar approach, starting early dismissals in November and continuing them biweekly throughout the school year. A memo from the district highlighted the loss of essential planning and professional development time, a direct result of the various challenges posed by COVID-19.
This shift comes on the heels of a national survey revealing that teacher job satisfaction plummeted from 69% pre-pandemic to just 44% in October 2020, with 63% of teachers reporting high stress levels and 54% experiencing burnout. The pandemic has led many educators to reconsider their career paths, with 38% indicating they are contemplating leaving the profession.
