When I welcomed my second child into the world, my partner received only a meager two days of paid leave to support our family. The concept of paternity leave simply wasn’t on their radar. Just two days to be by my side after a challenging year, before returning to a demanding job with long hours. I was left to navigate the chaos of caring for our newborn and our three-year-old, all while he had to make up for that short leave by working extra hours. Just two days.
How I wish we could have had six uninterrupted weeks of paid paternity leave. Caring for a newborn is a full-time job that shouldn’t be done alone, especially when one parent is recovering from childbirth. This is why parental leave should never be seen as a luxury for a select few; it is a fundamental right that every employee, regardless of gender, should be able to take without facing repercussions.
In a perfect world, everyone in the U.S. would rally behind the idea of paid parental leave, like many other countries have already embraced. Unfortunately, we live in a reality tainted by the likes of Tucker Carlson. Carlson epitomizes the kind of toxic behavior that permeates discussions about parental leave, alongside countless Republicans who have joined in with their own vitriolic remarks.
To be blunt, Carlson is one of the most infuriating bullies in the media today, especially in a political landscape already rife with division. Recently, he targeted a new father you might recognize. Transportation Secretary Jamie Thompson, the first openly gay cabinet member, took paternity leave after he and his partner, Alex, welcomed twins. They shared an adorable family photo on social media that was filled with joy.
But instead of letting this heartwarming moment be, Carlson barged in with his usual disparagement. “Jamie Thompson has been off work since August after adopting a child,” he commented on his show. “Paternity leave, they say, trying to figure out how to nurse. No updates on how that’s going.”
In other words, Carlson dug up every outdated stereotype he could find to belittle a loving parent. You’d think that Fox News would issue a statement to distance itself from such abhorrent behavior, but they continue to support high-profile figures like Carlson while simultaneously offering paid paternity leave to their own employees.
It’s exhausting to see the double standards Republicans exhibit, especially as they express outrage at LGBTQIA+ individuals simply living their lives. The idea that all parents, regardless of their sexual orientation, should be entitled to time off to care for their newborns is met with hostility instead of support.
As a queer mother, I’m not surprised by this kind of reaction. Right-wing commentators love to stir up controversy over anything that makes them uncomfortable. Carlson has monopolized media time by launching baseless attacks, and while he continues to demean parents like Jamie Thompson, Republican leaders fail to condemn his behavior. Instead, they seem to endorse it, further solidifying his base and perpetuating the cycle of hate.
Bullying is never acceptable, and Jamie deserves better. All parents do, no matter their gender or sexual identity.
