Here’s a selection of fantastic series currently available on Apple TV Plus.
Acapulco
Starring the talented Eugenio Derbez, “Acapulco” is a charming bilingual comedy that follows the journey of young Máximo Gallardo (Enrique Arrizon). He lands his dream job as a cabana boy at the trendiest resort in Acapulco, only to discover that the reality of his role is far more challenging than he expected. To thrive, he must manage demanding guests, a temperamental mentor, and a complex home life, all while avoiding shortcuts and temptations. I’m currently catching up on “Acapulco” weekly and wish I could binge it all at once! New episodes release every Friday on Apple TV+.
Foundation
This epic series, freshly renewed for a second season, is the first-ever adaptation of Isaac Asimov’s acclaimed novel series, brought to life by visionary showrunner David S. Goyer. “Foundation” follows Dr. Hari Seldon, who foresees the Empire’s downfall and embarks on a mission to create The Foundation to save civilization’s future. The ruling clones of the Empire, led by the Cleons, feel threatened by Hari’s predictions, leading to gripping conflicts. The show features standout performances from Jared Harris and Lee Pace. I haven’t started this yet, but it’s high on my watchlist and has received rave reviews. Streaming now, with new episodes every Friday.
Swagger
Inspired by NBA star Kevin Durant’s experiences, “Swagger” dives into the world of youth basketball, revealing the dreams, ambitions, and challenges faced by players, families, and coaches. Created by Reggie Rock Bythewood and featuring a stellar cast, this series shines a light on growing up in America. The first three episodes premiered on October 29.
Schmigadoon!
This whimsical musical comedy, produced by Lorne Michaels, stars Cecily Strong and Keegan-Michael Key as a couple who stumble upon a magical town where everyone acts like they’re in a 1940s musical. They learn they must find “true love” to escape. The first season features a star-studded cast, including Alan Cumming and Kristin Chenoweth. I watched and adored this series for its light-hearted fun and keen observations on modern issues. The entire first season is now available for streaming.
See
Set in a dystopian future where humanity has lost the ability to see, “See” tells the story of twins born with sight, challenging societal norms. I haven’t seen it yet, but it’s been highly recommended, and with two seasons available, it’s perfect for a binge! Jason Momoa stars in this compelling series, which is now streaming.
Central Park
This animated musical comedy, renewed for a third season, features a talented cast including Josh Gad and Leslie Odom Jr. It follows the Tillerman family as they navigate life in New York’s famous park while facing various challenges. I discovered “Central Park” during a flight and loved its quirky humor! The second half of season two is available on Apple TV+.
Truth Be Told
From acclaimed writer Nichelle Tramble Spellman, “Truth Be Told” gives viewers an intriguing look into America’s fascination with true crime podcasts. Starring Octavia Spencer and Kate Hudson, the new season sees podcaster Poppy Parnell delve into a case linked to her childhood friend. This series is on my watchlist, especially since I’ve heard it’s one of the platform’s hidden gems. Season 2 is streaming now.
Puppy Place
This delightful series follows the Peterson family as they help puppies find loving homes. Each episode highlights the unique story of a puppy and the family’s efforts to care for them. I can’t wait to watch this with my daughter! It’s currently streaming.
The Shrink Next Door
Based on true events, “The Shrink Next Door” explores the unusual relationship between psychiatrist Dr. Isaac Herschkopf (Paul Rudd) and his patient Marty Markowitz (Will Ferrell). The show delves into how their relationship evolves from a typical doctor-patient dynamic to something more manipulative. I’m eagerly looking forward to this release. Global premiere is on November 12, 2021.
Harriet The Spy
This animated adaptation of the classic children’s book features Beanie Feldstein as Harriet, an inquisitive young girl determined to become a writer. Set in 1960s New York, Harriet’s adventures include spying on others to gather information for her writing. This is another series I can’t wait to enjoy with my daughter! The first five episodes will be available on November 19, 2021.
