TikTok is Prompting Many Straight Women to Reevaluate Their Romantic Preferences

For those who have spent some time on TikTok, it’s no secret that the platform’s algorithm is astonishingly precise at recognizing our interests. It doesn’t simply highlight general hobbies; it seems to tap into our current desires — even those we might not consciously acknowledge.

As a queer individual, I understand why TikTok populates my feed with lesbian-themed content. The algorithm quickly picked up on my identity. However, it’s intriguing to observe straight women discovering their own curiosity about same-sex attraction through their For You Page (FYP). It feels like TikTok is revealing insights about their preferences that they themselves may not yet realize.

I’m not here to out anyone or suggest they’re something they’re not, but if you’re a straight woman frequently engaging with #wlw (women loving women) content, I can’t help but raise an eyebrow in playful curiosity.

The comments on these thirst trap videos are often comedic. Consider a video featuring a stunning queer woman in Norway, who asks where the local queer community is. The responses are filled with straight women declaring their newfound feelings: “I need to leave TikTok; I’m either laughing, crying, or experiencing ‘bi panic.’” Another comment reads, “I’ve been questioning if I’m bi, and now I know — Norway, here I come!”

In another instance, a viral #bussitchallenge video prompts comments from “straight” women like, “Yep, I’ve been mistaken my whole life” and “I need to stop asking myself if I like girls or guys because it’s clear now…” One even quips about being married while feeling drawn to women, highlighting the confusion many straight women are feeling.

Writer Emma Turetsky shared her experience with TikTok in an article for The Cut, stating that the platform helped her realize she’s a lesbian. “TikTok knows you better than you know yourself,” she explains, illustrating how the app can expose hidden interests. Turetsky’s revelation came after encountering what she dubbed “the Most Subtly Pornographic Video ever,” which, while work-safe, carried an undertone that was anything but.

As we see more users expressing their “bi panic” or contemplating their sexual orientation, the trend suggests a growing awareness of how societal norms around heterosexuality can be limiting. Compulsory heterosexuality, a concept Turetsky learned about on TikTok, is a powerful force that can lead many to question their identities.

Reflecting on my own journey, I often think about how different my life might have been if I had been aware of my options at a younger age. Yet, I find it fascinating that a social media platform, which I once thought was merely a playground for Gen Z dances, has played a role in validating so many experiences of self-discovery.

It’s important to note that while admiration can lead to genuine exploration, it can also veer into fetishization. Some queer individuals have shared their stories of engaging with straight women who were merely “curious,” often leading to painful realizations about the nature of their attraction. This dynamic can be toxic and dehumanizing.

Nonetheless, I can’t help but feel a sense of validation when I see straight women coming to terms with their attractions. I spent years grappling with my own fluctuating sexuality, so witnessing others embrace their paths is oddly reassuring. TikTok has proven to be a significant space for exploration and understanding, something I didn’t anticipate from an app focused on short-form videos.
