Americans really dislike washing dishes. In a thought-provoking “Would You Rather…?” survey, participants were asked to choose between a year without sex or a lifetime free from dishwashing. Surprisingly, one in five respondents found the latter option much more appealing: goodbye to sex, hello to a clean kitchen!

Birds Eye, in collaboration with Kelton Global, surveyed 1,014 individuals to gauge their feelings about dishwashing. The findings were quite shocking; it turns out that many Americans harbor an intense aversion to this chore. On average, Americans spend a staggering six days every year doing the dishes—a disheartening statistic for sure. It seems that some of us might actually be dedicating more time to scrubbing pots than enjoying our vacation days.

Furthermore, around 43 percent of respondents admitted to arguing with family or roommates about dish duty, sometimes on a daily basis. For those who aren’t in full-blown arguments, there’s likely a game of kitchen sink Jenga happening, where dirty dishes continue to pile up until someone is forced into action.

While it may seem a bit risqué for a frozen food brand like Birds Eye to pose such a question, the context is revealing. The company is launching a new line of sheet pan meals, which only require one pan to clean after cooking—far less than the six or so items typically needed for a regular meal. So, perhaps you can enjoy both meal prep and intimacy without sacrificing one for the other?

Though this survey may not be the most rigorous, many of us can relate to the struggle of dishwashing. Living in a dishwasher-less home feels like being stuck in a time when scrubbing pots was a daily reality. I certainly wouldn’t have survived the 1700s with such a chore!

If you find yourself in a similar situation without a dishwasher, consider sharing this survey with your partner; you might just convince them to invest in one after all. In summary, a recent survey reveals that many Americans would rather give up sex than deal with the never-ending chore of washing dishes. With the average person spending six days a year on this task, it’s no wonder dish-related arguments are common in households. Birds Eye’s new meal options may provide a solution, allowing for less cleanup and more time for what truly matters—whether that’s intimacy or simply enjoying life.
