If you haven’t heard yet, the talented Emmy-winning and Academy Award-nominated executive producer Ava DuVernay has launched a captivating new series on NBC this fall titled “Home Sweet Home.” This show is separate from Disney Plus’s recent Home Alone release, also called Home Sweet Home Alone, and I can’t contain my excitement!
Recently, I had the fantastic opportunity to join a Zoom call with Ava and two families featured on “Home Sweet Home.” They shared their incredible experiences, and after catching the first episode of this unique social experiment, I’m utterly convinced that Ava is a creative genius.
About the Show
“Home Sweet Home” pairs two families from vastly different backgrounds for a transformative home-swapping experience. The families engage in a week-long exchange, stepping into each other’s lives to challenge their assumptions about race, religion, and economic status. At the end of each episode, the families come together to discuss their eye-opening experiences.
The premiere episode was so emotionally charged that it brought me to tears. I can only imagine how impactful the upcoming episodes will be, as the show mirrors the vulnerability seen in programs like “Wife Swap,” where families trade homes and lives with complete strangers.
The Experience
While the idea of inviting strangers into my home might seem a bit daunting, I find the prospect of immersing myself in another culture through this home swap experience genuinely intriguing. One of the Wixx twins from the first episode likened the experience to “diving into a pool,” expressing the uncertainty of what to expect—whether the water would be cold or warm. It’s clear these kids possess a remarkable level of maturity!
To facilitate the swap, families provide a “handbook” for their new hosts, offering insights into their daily lives, which I think is such a thoughtful touch. Now I’m curious about what I would include in my own handbook!
Importance of the Show
This experience is not only emotional but also essential. In a time when intolerance is often on display, Ava’s show serves as a reminder that diverse cultures and families should be celebrated, not just tolerated or feared. It highlights that despite our differences in religion and history, we share many common values.
If NBC greenlights a second season, count me in! I would love the chance to experience another culture firsthand and swap homes for a week. New episodes air weekly on Fridays at 8 pm/7 pm Central on NBC, with episodes available for streaming on Hulu the following day.
