If you have a child in their tween or teen years, it’s likely they’re all about TikTok, or at least their friends are. Just last week, I had a chat with my nine-year-old about setting up a TikTok account for her. On one hand, I’m thrilled that she’s picking up new dances, which she really enjoys. Plus, she’s making friends who help her learn these moves.
I can relate to being a kid without cable, feeling left out when friends discussed the shows they watched over the weekend. It was tough not having anything to contribute to those conversations. So, the nostalgic part of me is genuinely happy for my daughter, who gets to partake in fun experiences with her friends. (By the way, is “totes” still a thing?)
However, the protective mom in me feels uneasy about her learning TikTok dances from friends, considering the types of content out there. Social media can be overwhelming for kids, and many of the songs associated with TikTok dances are clearly not suitable for their age. While I appreciate her exploration, I’m not comfortable with unrestricted access just yet. This is why I’m relieved to hear about a new app designed for kids, often referred to as “TikTok for Kids” — Zigazoo.
What is Zigazoo?
Zigazoo is a kid-friendly app that enables children to create and share short-form videos, much like TikTok or Instagram Reels.
How Does Zigazoo Work?
Similar to TikTok, Zigazoo features “challenges” initiated by kid celebrities from around the globe. Once your child downloads the app and sets up an account, they can respond to these challenges by creating their own videos. Each kid celebrity has their own channel, which children can follow. Zigazoo is also collaborating with brands to offer exciting new challenges, such as recent ones tied to the new Addams Family movie through a partnership with MGM Studios.
Who Created Zigazoo?
The app was developed by parents who wanted better online experiences for their children during the pandemic. Their aim is to create a safe, positive community that fosters joy, healthy online relationships, and personal growth.
When Was Zigazoo Established?
Founded in 2020, Zigazoo was designed to provide parents and educators with tools to make screen time healthier and more enjoyable for families. There’s even a Zigazoo Classroom feature where teachers can sign up their classes to assign challenges that encourage peer-to-peer video sharing.
Key Features of Zigazoo:
- Verified Sign-Up Process: Users must go through a verification process via phone number or single sign-on using Google, Apple, or Facebook accounts. All accounts are created with parental consent to ensure safety.
- Human Moderation: All content is reviewed by moderators for relevance, kid-friendliness, and to prevent the sharing of personal information. Only approved videos are visible.
- Positive Interactions: Unlike many other social media platforms, Zigazoo ensures that users only see content that has passed their moderation process. Interactions are limited to positive emojis and stickers, promoting healthy relationships online.
If you’re curious, I’ll be having my daughter try out Zigazoo over the weekend, and I’ll share our thoughts afterward. If you want to explore the app yourself, you can download it.

Zigazoo is an innovative app designed specifically for kids, providing a safe space for them to create and share videos while engaging with fun challenges. Created by concerned parents during the pandemic, the app prioritizes security and positive interactions. With a verified sign-up process and human moderation, Zigazoo aims to foster a healthy online environment for children.
