As someone who has endured childhood trauma, I can relate to the agonizing experience of feeling trapped in silence. The weight of abuse, compounded by unexpressed anger, shame, and fear, can severely impact one’s mental and physical health over time. I never thought I’d find common ground with a celebrity like Paris Hilton, but her story resonates deeply.

Whether trauma occurs at home, in schools, or under the care of adults, the consequences for children and teenagers are devastating. Unresolved generational abuse, combined with societal pressures to mold compliant children, can shatter a young person’s self-worth and instill a lasting sense of anxiety that often extends into adulthood. If left unaddressed, these experiences can perpetuate a cycle of abuse in future relationships.

This is why it’s crucial for survivors to share their stories—breaking the cycle begins with each individual choosing to speak out.

In my younger years, I would see Paris Hilton on magazine covers and TV shows, believing the media portrayal of her as a privileged socialite who partied with celebrities. I envied her seemingly perfect life, unaware of the struggles she faced.

In a poignant article for The Washington Post, Hilton reveals the harrowing experience of being taken against her will at 16 to a facility for “troubled” youth. Many of these youth have been showcased on programs like Dr. Phil, who is presently facing a negligence lawsuit regarding alleged sexual assault incidents at a Utah ranch where he reportedly pressured families to send their children.

Hilton describes her abduction as “parent-approved kidnapping.” “When I was 16, I was awakened one night by two men with handcuffs,” she recalls. “They asked if I wanted to go ‘the easy way or the hard way’ before carrying me from my home as I screamed for help. I had no idea why or where I was being taken … I soon learned I was being sent to hell.”

Hilton endured four different facilities, where she was subjected to psychological and physical abuse. “I was choked, slapped across the face, spied on while showering, and deprived of sleep,” she shares. “I was called vulgar names and forced to take medication without a diagnosis. At one facility in Utah, I was locked in solitary confinement in a room covered in scratch marks and blood stains.”

Fear prevented her from revealing the abuse to anyone outside, as all communication with her family was monitored. This isolation is alarmingly common in such centers, where young victims are often gaslighted and misled about their situations.

Hilton’s revelations highlight a deeply flawed system that often leaves children more traumatized after their stay than before they entered. “An estimated 120,000 young people are in congregate-care facilities across the country at any time,” she states. “However, oversight is minimal, with little data tracking placements or monitoring the quality of care.”

Hilton is urging the Biden Administration to pass a federal bill of rights for children in these facilities. Recently, she met with Congress alongside Democratic Representative Alex Parker and other lawmakers to advocate for legislation aimed at preventing further abuse. “Every child placed in these facilities should have a right to a safe, humane environment, free from threats and practices of solitary confinement, and physical or chemical restraint at the whim of staff,” Hilton asserts. “Had such rights existed and been enforced, I and countless other survivors could have been spared the abuse and trauma that have haunted us into adulthood.”

While I wouldn’t wish Paris Hilton’s experiences on anyone, I am grateful she is using her platform to shine a light on these critical issues.
