In fact, she sometimes interrupts us with “no timeout!” when she senses we’re counting.

Our pediatrician advised us to be fair, reminding us that her “misbehavior” was often innocent, stemming from her limited ability to communicate and the emotional development typical of toddlers. We occasionally count to three twice, and sometimes we skip the timeout if she doesn’t stop by three. Consistency has been key, and this approach helps her learn respect for authority and the significance of consequences—principles many parents tend to overlook until it’s too late. My advice? Take advantage of this early stage, when your child hasn’t yet developed the ability to push back beyond a simple “no.”
