Over Half of Women Are Currently Living Paycheck to Paycheck

As we approach the two-year mark since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, many women continue to face significant challenges regarding their careers and financial stability, even more so than men.

A recent study from the University of Phoenix Career Institute reveals that 51% of women are living paycheck to paycheck, while 46% are constantly anxious about job security in the current economic climate. Furthermore, one in three women report that the pandemic has severely impacted their careers, despite 83% feeling they possess the necessary skills and are employable.

Other studies indicate that the financial strain is widespread, with a Highland Solutions survey from December 2020 showing that 63% of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck. Additionally, when a parent must stay home for childcare, it is frequently the lower-earning individual—often women—who takes on this role, compounded by the persistent wage gap exacerbated by gender inequality, particularly for Women of Color.

What Steps Can We Take?

What steps can we take to remedy this situation? While individual effort is important, it is evident that the U.S. needs to critically evaluate its support systems, including childcare, paid parental leave, and equitable pay practices.

Some of these changes are governmental, but Veloria highlights that private companies and educational institutions can also implement immediate improvements to create a more supportive and flexible work environment. “We have opportunities to make workplaces more engaging and supportive, allowing workers to achieve a better work-life balance,” she notes. “Higher education can also adapt to better serve adult learners interested in advancing their careers.”

A Glimmer of Hope

Despite these challenges, there is a glimmer of hope. The University of Phoenix’s report indicates that many Americans, including women, remain optimistic about their futures—78% expressed hope for their career prospects, with 70% attributing their resilience during the pandemic to this optimism.

Veloria attributes this positivity to a shift in workplace culture that is becoming more inclusive, providing mental health support, and promoting a healthy work-life balance. Additionally, some women are using this time to reassess their career paths, returning to school, or finding remote positions that better fit their lifestyles.

As we navigate this pivotal moment, it is essential to remain hopeful while acknowledging the ongoing struggles many women and families face daily.
