On a chilly evening, my twins, Mia and Jake, who were nearly 8 years old at the time, snuggled up on the couch with me as the familiar voice of the host announced the latest season of “The Bachelor.” It was January 1, 2018, and Arie Luyendyk Jr. was about to embark on his journey for love.

Me: “Time for bed, kids. My show is on.”
Them: “Wait…a race car driver? Is he going on dates with all those girls?! Popcorn, please!”

And just like that, our delightful adventure into the world of Bachelor Nation began. My husband was less than thrilled. “This is nonsense,” he would exclaim. “What are you thinking, Jessica?” He certainly wasn’t on board with my decision to let our kids indulge in the drama of “The Bachelor” and “The Bachelorette.”

However, I stood my ground. Why should I deny my kids the joy they found in this reality dating series? I took precautions to shield them from anything inappropriate. Their little hands acted as “kissing goggles” during the steamy moments, and my thumb was always ready to fast-forward through the raunchier scenes.

Beyond the usual dating shenanigans, I realized that this show offered important lessons about human behavior. My kids became captivated by the unfolding relationships, whether it was the interactions among contestants or the lead’s connections with them. They knew the cast better than I did, predicting who would get a one-on-one date, who would leave heartbroken, and who would make it to hometown visits.

Here are some valuable lessons my children learned from our time spent watching “The Bachelor”:

  1. Be Genuine
This show illustrates the importance of authenticity in friendships and relationships. Encourage your true self to shine, and you’ll attract good friends and maybe even find “your person.”
  2. Take Chances in Love
As contestants step out of the limo, they show that making an impression can be fun. Embrace new situations and don’t be afraid to laugh at yourself.
  3. Love is an Adventure
Though it may sound cliché, love can blossom in unexpected ways—whether through a blind date or an unconventional reality show experience. Stay open to possibilities.
  4. Don’t Settle
Just because someone declares their love doesn’t mean they are your only option. Love should be reciprocal; take your time and build meaningful connections.
  5. Recognize Red Flags
Statements like “Nobody will ever love you like I do” should raise alarms. Healthy relationships require individuals to be happy with themselves first.
  6. Drink Responsibly
Those who overindulge often appear foolish, especially on television. When the time comes, remember moderation is key.
  7. Avoid Being a Tattletale
Nobody appreciates a snitch, so steer clear of being the person who spills the tea.
  8. Don’t Be the Bully
Being unkind is never a good look, and it’s important to treat others with respect.
  9. Appreciate Your Mom
She’s the one letting you watch this show, while many of your friends are glued to Disney+. Plus, you’ll want her on your best side for those hometown visits!

As my children grow older and eventually leave home, I will cherish those evenings spent laughing and critiquing contestants on “The Bachelor.” I take pride in the life lessons they’ve learned, which will hopefully help them forge genuine friendships and find lasting love.
