A nine-year-old boy, who was present at the Astroworld concert headlined by Travis Scott, is currently in a medically induced coma. This tragic event has resulted in the deaths of eight individuals, with many others hospitalized due to injuries sustained during the crowd surge, which has been described as a “death trap” by the boy’s aunt.
The catastrophic incident occurred on November 5, 2021, at the Astroworld Festival in Houston, Texas. Among the fatalities, the ages of the eight deceased concertgoers range from 14 to 27. As of the latest reports, 13 individuals remain hospitalized, including young Ezra Blount.
Ezra was being carried on his father’s shoulders when chaos broke out as concertgoers rushed toward the stage. His father, Treston Blount, lost consciousness during the surge, and when he regained awareness, Ezra was missing. “The crowd just started going crazy and Treston goes, ‘I can’t breathe. I can’t breathe,’” said his aunt, Lily McKenzie.
After frantic calls to local hospitals, they finally located Ezra at Texas Children’s Hospital, where doctors informed them that he had suffered severe brain swelling and had gone into cardiac arrest. Currently, Ezra is in a medically induced coma to help reduce the swelling and stabilize his condition. “He’s made it very far. The doctor the first day told us that he wasn’t expected to make it after the day, but it’s how many days after, so I know he’s fighting in there,” Lily shared regarding her nephew’s progress.
The family has enlisted the help of civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump and plans to file a lawsuit against the event organizers, joining the many others who are taking legal action in the aftermath of this avoidable tragedy. “The suffering that this family is going through is immeasurable,” Crump stated. “This little boy had his whole life ahead of him — a life that is currently hanging in the balance because of the reckless mismanagement that ensued at the Astroworld Festival.”
Lily expressed her disappointment, stating, “Having more security, having exits. A lot of things that could have prevented that. It’s really no excuse for it.” In response to the tragedy, Travis Scott has announced he will cover funeral expenses for the deceased and provide refunds to ticket holders, although many feel this comes too late.
A criminal investigation has been initiated by local authorities, but as of now, no arrests or charges have been made. For those wishing to support Ezra Blount’s recovery, contributions can be made to his GoFundMe page.
