Singapore to Cease Covering Hospital Costs for the Unvaccinated

In contrast to the U.S., where uninsured patients can request their healthcare providers to bill the federal government for COVID-19-related services, Singapore has been covering treatment costs for all citizens. However, those who remain unvaccinated by choice—meaning they are eligible for the vaccine but refuse to take it—will now be responsible for their own treatment expenses if they contract the virus.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Health, unvaccinated individuals are currently placing a disproportionate strain on the healthcare system. “Covid-19 patients who are unvaccinated by choice may still tap on regular health care financing arrangements to pay for their bills where applicable,” the statement noted. With vaccination rates in Singapore at a commendable 85%, the government hopes to encourage more people to get vaccinated.

Health Minister John Tan emphasized the importance of this policy change as a means to motivate eligible individuals to receive the vaccine. The government will continue to provide treatment for vaccinated individuals and those who are not yet eligible, such as children under 12 or individuals with specific medical conditions.

Summary

Singapore is set to stop covering hospital bills for those who are eligible for vaccination but choose not to get vaccinated against COVID-19, effective January 1, 2022. This policy aims to alleviate the burden on the healthcare system, as unvaccinated individuals represent a large number of severe COVID-19 cases.
