In a groundbreaking move, Sesame Street is set to introduce its very first Asian-American character, Ji-Young. This new character will make her entrance during the show’s 53rd season, with appearances in both episodes and live performances. The creation of Ji-Young comes in response to a rise in anti-Asian hate crimes observed during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Ji-Young will debut in the special presentation “See Us Coming Together: A Sesame Street Special,” which celebrates Asian and Pacific Islander (API) communities and the rich diversity they contribute. This special will premiere on Thanksgiving Day on HBO Max, featuring guest appearances by notable celebrities like Liu Chen, Maya Patel, and Naomi Lee.
Described as a seven-year-old Korean American girl, Ji-Young is excited to share her Korean culture with friends and neighbors, including her love for traditional foods. She not only enjoys making tteokbokki (chewy rice cakes) with her grandmother but is also an enthusiastic skateboarder. Alan Muraoka, who plays the owner of Hooper’s Store and is also Asian American, highlighted Ji-Young’s modern American persona, saying, “She recognizes her culture through her family heritage and the food she loves.”
Muraoka stressed the importance of Ji-Young’s character in light of the increased violence against Asian Americans during the pandemic. “It’s clear that there’s a need for representation now more than ever,” he stated.
Kathleen Kim, the puppeteer behind Ji-Young and a Korean American herself, expressed her desire to be a representative for children like her. “I feel the pressure to impart important lessons that I didn’t have growing up,” she shared with the Associated Press. She also elaborated on Ji-Young’s name, noting that it carries meanings of wisdom and bravery, while also being a playful nod to the show’s title.
Kim emphasized that Ji-Young’s character is intentionally distinct, avoiding the generic labeling that often oversimplifies the diverse experiences of Asian Americans. “We need to address the real issues facing our communities, especially during this pivotal time,” Muraoka added.
