I Don’t Feel ‘Old’—But I’m Totally Into ‘Old-Person’ Activities

When you hit your mid-40s, a lot of things start changing. You might find yourself dealing with acne and wrinkles simultaneously. Night sweats become a regular occurrence, and everything seems to ache. But even with all that, I still don’t consider myself “old.” I mean, I just finished college a few years ago—oh wait, that was nearly 25 years back!

Sure, I might be in middle age, but I refuse to label myself as “old.” That said, I’m completely on board with activities typically associated with older folks.

Knitting and Cozy Nights

Take knitting, for example. I picked it up a couple of years ago. I’m not great at it, and it takes me ages to finish a single scarf, yet you can often find me on a Saturday night cozied up on the couch, blanket draped over my legs, happily knitting away.

Leisurely Strolls

Just the other day, my partner and I enjoyed a day date. We skipped the day drinking, fancy lunches, or catching the latest blockbuster. Instead, we took a leisurely stroll through the arboretum to admire the trees. If that’s not quintessential “old person” behavior, I don’t know what is.

Adjustable Beds and Embracing Change

Oh, and we’ve ordered one of those fancy adjustable beds that lets you elevate your head and feet separately. I can’t wait to dive into that! I’m pretty sure it adds a solid two decades to our age, but who cares?

I might not want to be old or feel old, but let’s be real—I wear orthotics and have a hip replacement on the horizon, so maybe I’m not as young as I think.

The Freedom of Middle Age

What’s great about this in-between age is the freedom to embrace “old-person” stuff without a second thought. Strolling under autumn leaves is delightful. Knitting is incredibly relaxing. And an adjustable bed? It’s a genius invention that has me genuinely excited.

One of the perks of being in this stage of life is that you genuinely stop caring about what others think. You let go of expectations and just do what feels good for you. I used to be the party girl, closing down bars at dawn, and now the thought of being out past 9:30 PM sounds exhausting. Give me a happy hour and a cozy bed by nine any day. Forget loud rock concerts—I’ll take a piano bar where I can sing along without losing my voice.

Embracing ‘Old-Person’ Activities

Loving “old-person” activities like sipping tea or solving puzzles doesn’t mean we’re fading into the background. Quite the contrary! We’re still here, making our voices heard about how bizarre middle age can be. Whether it’s slathering on wrinkle cream or dyeing our hair blue, we’re doing what makes us feel good.

It turns out that embracing “old-person” activities is actually pretty awesome.
