Fashion Is for Everyone—You Can Absolutely ‘Pull It Off’

“Oh, I adore that outfit, but I just don’t think I could pull it off.” Sound familiar? How often have you said that, or heard someone else say it? We often assess our body type, age, and personality, and then decide we can’t wear certain styles because we don’t think we can “pull it off.” When you really think about it, that notion is pretty ridiculous.

I’m here to tell you that regardless of who you are or how you see yourself, if you want to wear something and do it confidently, you can rock any outfit you love.

Recently, my two good friends, Mia and Sarah, took a trip to Las Vegas. No worries—I was invited, but I had other commitments. They’re great friends, so it’s all good.

As they were prepping for their trip, I eagerly asked them about the outfits they planned to bring. To my surprise, neither of them had a clue! Mia shrugged and said she’d just wear what she took last time—which turned out to be a single sparkly tank top and a pink velvet jacket. Sarah didn’t have a single outfit picked out!

I was stunned. This was Vegas! They had exciting dinners and shows lined up! How could they not have every outfit planned, even down to the lipstick? This was a crisis!

So, three days later, we hit the mall to gather all the sparkly, sequined outfits we could find. There was a lot of “Can I pull this off?” chatter in the fitting rooms. They were fixated on the tiniest imperfections, but all I saw was how incredible they looked in their “sparkly boob shirts.” I cheered them on like a true friend should.

By the end of our shopping spree, they each had a fabulous outfit for every night. While they were away, I demanded selfies, and they happily obliged. Their huge smiles in the mirror selfies proved that you can truly pull off any outfit if you simply wear it and own it. Their “sparkly boob shirts” were everything! I was so proud, and I can’t wait to join them next time. I’ve already added a sequined crop top and a blue satin skirt to my Christmas list.

The Only Fashion Rules You Need

Here’s the thing: no matter who you are or what you look like, if you want to wear something, you definitely can. Your only two fashion rules should be: 1. It covers your essential bits, and 2. It makes you feel good. That’s it! There’s no outfit you “can’t pull off,” only those that make you feel fabulous and those that don’t.

Let’s talk about clothes for a sec. Long ago, humans decided being naked wasn’t ideal, so we started wearing whatever we could find for protection from the elements. Over time, this turned into a complicated web of fashion rules that we feel compelled to follow, despite it all being made up!

Many of us love fashion, and I’m one of them. I understand that fashion is largely an invented concept, but that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy it. I’ve lived in a larger body my entire life, and let me tell you: mainstream fashion often overlooks folks like me. Because my options are limited, I refuse to make arbitrary rules about what I can or can’t wear. If I like something and it fits, I’m rocking it. No questions asked.

Sure, wearing what you want might bring some criticism. Some people are just too caught up in the “rules” to realize that everyone has the right to wear whatever makes them feel good. You might encounter a stare or a snide comment from someone who can’t embrace their own style. But why should their opinion matter more than yours? When you feel good, you look good—end of story.

Embrace Your Style

So, stop questioning if you can pull it off. Instead, ask yourself if you want to wear it. Life is too short to skip out on that sparkly boob shirt!
