As a parent, my affection for my children is as intense as a celebrity’s obsession with their latest trend. However, there are moments when I find myself wishing for a brief respite from their adorable antics. Here are five scenarios where I could use a little distance from my little ones.

1. In the Dead of Night

Hey there, kiddo, do you hear that? It’s the gentle sounds of nature—a raccoon scavenging through the trash and an owl hooting nearby. These sounds are reminders that it’s time for you to be asleep. If you feel scared or lonely, I’m here for cuddles and comfort. However, I have little patience for midnight requests for snacks like goldfish crackers or additional storytime because of a bug bite. Sorry, but that’s a hard pass.

2. When They’re a Sticky Mess

If you happen to be covered in a multitude of substances—be it juice, mud, or worse—please step outside and wait by the garden hose. No matter how charming you are, I need a moment to mentally prepare myself before diving into cleanup mode. Even if you were covered in fine wine, I’d still need a breather.

3. Before the Sun Rises

Waking me up before the crack of dawn will earn you a look that can only be described as disapproval. Just because the architect of our home didn’t consider my need for sleep doesn’t give you the right to pounce on my bed without so much as a cup of coffee in your tiny hands. Next time, bring me a pastry.

4. During Intimate Moments

Unless we’re part of a progressive society that embraces such openness, having you walk into the bedroom during private moments is, quite frankly, embarrassing. Bonus points if you express concern about what you see and inquire if your father is hurting me. Let’s just agree that anything involving “mom and dad” and “intimacy” should remain off-limits to little ears. Just back out slowly and forget this ever happened.

5. In the Bathroom

Without fail, you follow me into the bathroom, eagerly asking if I’m going to PEE or POO and whether you can see. This might be your clever way of getting back at me for potty training you, but I need you to understand that a “potty break” is not a social event.

It’s perfectly normal for parents to need a little alone time in certain situations, even if only temporarily. However, before long, you’ll find that your kids are utterly irresistible, thanks to the magic of parenthood. In summary, while we cherish our children, there are times when a little space is much appreciated. Embrace those moments, and soon enough, the love will bring you back together.
