Lessons in Life and Light: A Journey Through Pregnancy and Loss

For a year and a half prior to beginning our conception journey, my partner and I immersed ourselves in a wealth of information surrounding pregnancy, childbirth, and parenting. I consumed documentaries, devoured countless blogs and books, and engaged in conversations with friends and a midwife, all in the hopes of preparing for the moment I would become pregnant. I was convinced I knew everything there was to know. I envisioned a flawless pregnancy filled with blissful moments. My plan included giving birth in a birthing center utilizing hypnosis, exclusively breastfeeding for the first three to six months, and diligently pumping once I returned to work. I intended to practice baby-wearing, co-sleeping for a few months, and even considered making my own baby food. I believed I would embody the ideal mother with the perfect partner and child. Anyone who chose differently simply lacked the knowledge I possessed.

However, my expectations shattered when I experienced a miscarriage. My pregnancy dreams crumbled, and I came to a stark realization: much of what I desired was beyond my control. Despite diligently following ‘the rules,’ the outcome was not as I had envisioned. In my struggle to miscarry naturally, I found myself in a hospital—the very place I had promised myself I would avoid. My body failed to perform as expected, and I required medical assistance. The D&C procedure on August 12th surprisingly turned out to be the least distressing aspect of the ordeal.

Life, as we know, can take unexpected turns. Events like these often catch us completely off guard. Since my miscarriage, I have developed a deeper empathy for women who make different choices regarding childbirth and parenting. Some women face challenges with natural childbirth or breastfeeding, while others may simply choose not to. The most profound lesson I’ve learned is that every woman’s journey is unique and valuable, and my role is to provide support rather than judgment.

This year, I launched my blog titled “Lessons in Life and Light,” inspired by my passions for life and photography. Little did I know how significant that title would become—this experience has transformed my understanding of life’s lessons. I eagerly await the return of my cycle so my partner and I can try again. I still aspire to achieve that magical pregnancy experience, complete with all the joys and challenges it entails. I remain committed to my plans for a natural birth in a birthing center using hypnosis, as well as breastfeeding and other parenting techniques. However, I now recognize that if my plans don’t unfold as intended, I won’t berate myself. I’ve learned that control is often an illusion, and what truly matters is the love I can provide to my child and the support I offer to other women navigating similar paths.
