My 16-Year-Old Has No Interest in Getting His Driver’s License, and That’s Okay

So, my son Jake, who’s always needed a gentle push in life, has zero enthusiasm for getting his driver’s license. It’s not that he doesn’t want it; he’s actually working against himself when it comes to the process.

His driving instructor mentioned that while she’s not nervous to be in the car with him anymore, he still makes some “unique choices.” For instance, he might pull over to grab a piece of gum or laugh while revving the engine at a stop sign. Thankfully, she assured me he’s not dangerous, but it’s certainly quirky behavior. Oddly enough, this isn’t just a driving thing. Most of his shoes have mysteriously vanished, leaving only his flip-flops behind (not the best footwear for a teen who can’t quite remember which pedal is which). And when it’s time for practice, he has a knack for slipping into what I call his “possum” sleep, a skill he magically deploys whenever faced with a task he’d rather avoid. At this rate, it seems like he may never get that license.

He does drive when it’s necessary, but let’s be real—this kid operates under pressure most of the time. He thinks tossing his candy wrappers in the trash is a huge hassle, and the only way I can get him to walk the dog is by threatening to take away his phone. However, this approach has surprisingly led him to try out for the tennis team this year and make a solid group of friends after being nudged into theater camp. Plus, compulsory percussion lessons landed him a spot in the marching band, boosting his confidence as he performed in front of a crowd.

So, it felt like a no-brainer to insist he get his driver’s license, even though he doesn’t want to. But then again, why should that stop us? The list of things he’s ever wanted to do willingly is pretty short.

I’ve tried to ask him about his reluctance, but he’s not exactly chatty and usually just shrugs. Skipping out on the teenage rite of passage of driving seems contradictory to what most 16-year-olds want. But does it really matter why he’s not interested? Maybe it’s time I accept that, while getting a driver’s license is a big deal for many teens, it’s just not on Jake’s radar.

For now, I’ll keep my ears open for any hints he might drop because I know he won’t stay close forever.

In summary, my son may not be enthusiastic about getting his driver’s license, and that’s perfectly fine. I’m learning to appreciate his unique journey and be patient as he figures out what he truly wants.
