Pandemic-related stress is a significant issue that many families have faced, particularly those with multiple children. A recent study from the University of Waterloo reveals that in households with more than one child, the effects of Covid-19 stress often fall more heavily on a single sibling, which can exacerbate family tensions and contribute to a cycle of stress and emotional distress.
The study highlights that the stress stemming from the pandemic can create a harmful feedback loop within families, where one child’s struggles with mental health lead to increased reactivity from parents. Dillon Browne, the lead researcher and a professor of clinical psychology, noted, “Parents are often more reactive and less supportive towards the child experiencing the most mental health challenges.” This dynamic can further intensify the stress experienced by caregivers, resulting in heightened anxiety, anger, and depression.
Browne emphasized that the influence of mental health issues within the family is reciprocal. “Difficulties in mental health among family members can amplify each other in a feedback loop,” he explained. “Our findings suggest that the child’s mental health primarily influences parenting, rather than the other way around.”
The research involved surveys from over 500 caregivers and 1,000 siblings, focusing on family dynamics and mental health impacts over a two-month period during the pandemic. Browne remarked that while existing studies have documented the mental health challenges faced by both children and parents, this research sheds light on how these issues affect family relationships as a whole.
To address these challenges, the findings advocate for family therapy as a means of breaking the negative feedback loop. “To truly understand children’s mental health issues during COVID-19, we must view them through the lens of the family system, considering how the pandemic impacts the family unit,” stated Browne, who is also a Canada Research Chair in Child and Family Clinical Psychology.
