What Every Parent Thinks as They Enter the Library

Alright, kiddos, listen up. We’re about to step inside the library, so stop staring at yourselves in the glass doors. I need your full attention for just a moment. As we enter the Children’s Section, you’ll see a cardboard cutout of that popular character, Pete the Cat, and maybe even Captain Underpants. Let’s make sure they’re still standing when we walk past!
I know those empty aisles look like a race track, and I know the quiet atmosphere is tempting one of you – I won’t name names – to break out into song. But we’ve already had our fun at the park, and now it’s time to engage our minds instead of our lungs. Here’s the plan:
We’re going to find a small table – that rainbow chair one by the window is ideal if it’s available. On this table, you’ll pile up the books you want to borrow, and I’ll make the final call on which ones we take home. Remember, I’m the decision-maker here, and I will mainly consider how much text is on each page.
We’re checking out ten books in total. Ten! That’s the same number as your fingers and toes combined.
I know you’re drawn to books with “butt” in the title. I might allow one. And I see you eyeing those graphic pictures of fierce animals. You can have one of those too.
Some of the books might have worn pages or stains that look suspiciously like snot. We’ll look past those imperfections and appreciate the stories within.
Avoid the bins of board books in the back – they’re too gross for us to handle.
Please don’t pull out seventeen books at once and scatter them everywhere. One book at a time, please. If you can’t read the words, examine the pictures instead. Yes, you can sit on the floor, but no forward rolls allowed!
You can definitely ask the librarian a question, but snacks are a no-go.
Once we’ve gathered our ten books, we might try the Self Check-Out if it’s open. I might let you help scan the barcodes. If we take turns and everything goes smoothly, we can listen to the Sing 2 soundtrack on the way home while enjoying the bumpy road.
Are we ready? In the name of literacy, let’s go!
