Personal Time
My SUV has been in the shop for nearly a week now, and honestly, it’s driving me to the brink. “What’s the problem?” asks my sweet, yet clueless partner. He doesn’t realize that this isn’t merely a mode of transportation. It’s not just how I ferry my kids from ballet to soccer and back to gymnastics. The car is my personal sanctuary. Sometimes, I just need some time away from everyone.
Bless his heart, but my husband also doesn’t understand why I insist on running errands solo. (Or perhaps he does, but pretends not to, hoping I won’t slip out the door without the kids.) It’s not that I’m avoiding my little ones. It’s just that I occasionally need a break from them. Yes, I said it.
Let me clarify, my family is my everything, but too much togetherness can be overwhelming. Between parenting, working, and juggling a million other responsibilities, I need some downtime. And that downtime isn’t as easy to come by as you might think. I do what I can to maintain the status quo. The kids will still be fed and bathed. Dinner will still be prepared, and dishes will be done. All I ask is for my family to respect my time in my SUV, alone.
Respect a Mom’s Personal Sanctuary
Saturdays are my favorite. It’s the one day of the week you’ll likely find me (intentionally) awake before 7 a.m. What motivates me? The chance to swing by Starbucks and navigate the grocery store without little ones in tow.
I don’t want to referee when they’re racing through the aisles, knocking things over. And I certainly don’t want to dig random items out of the cart that are not coming home with us. I just want to listen to my favorite podcast and feel accomplished when I stick to my grocery list (or at least come close). I want to sip my overpriced coffee without the threat of small hands causing a spill in a tug-of-war over who gets to push the cart.
As a child, I never understood why my mom would grab the grocery ads and spend her mornings darting back and forth between several supermarkets. All that time in the car? Why? Once I had kids, it all made sense. Sure, she was trying to save money, but I suspect she was also carving out her own personal sanctuary.
Here’s to You, Mom
Sometimes it’s simply driving to pick up dinner solo. Other times, it’s getting to school early for pickup. But my cherished time is spent in my SUV. It’s quiet and peaceful. When I’m attempting to catch up on work, it’s just me and the sound of my keyboard, without hearing “Mom, mom,” every few minutes. Do you realize how much you can accomplish when you’re not being pulled in a hundred different directions? And it’s incredible how much tranquility you can find when you have time for what brings you joy.
Sometimes, I just sit and catch up on my favorite Netflix show in the pickup line, waiting for the kids to emerge from class. Other times, it’s about simply having the chance to unwind and breathe deeply. There’s nothing better than a satisfying sigh or a compelling story to soothe me.
I might crack open a book and immerse myself in its pages. Yes, take me back—way back—to 16th-century French historical fiction. It’s a break, and moms are entitled to breaks. This time is ultimately restorative: nothing compares to that quiet stillness that centers you, regardless of how chaotic things have been at home. No matter how many messes have been made or how loud the kids or your partner have been. Having a space where you can enjoy a little alone time without interruptions isn’t just beneficial for you; it’s good for everyone around you.
So, fellow moms, here’s your reminder. Grant yourself grace and take time for yourself. Even if that just means sitting in the parking lot in peaceful silence.
