Emilio Delgado, beloved for his role as Luis, the proprietor of the Fix-It Shop on Sesame Street, passed away at his New York residence on March 10, surrounded by loved ones. He was 81 years old. Delgado is survived by his wife, Carol, and their two children, son Aram and daughter Lauren. According to Carol, his death was due to multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer.

Delgado’s portrayal of Luis, which began in 1971 and spanned over four decades, broke ground for Mexican-American representation in television. At a time when non-stereotypical Latinx characters were scarce, Luis provided visibility and relatability for Latinx children, showcasing their experiences and culture. The character not only helped children learn to count in both Spanish and English but also featured a heartfelt romance with Maria (played by Sonia Manzano), culminating in a memorable wedding on the show in 1988.

The news of Delgado’s passing ignited an outpouring of appreciation on social media. “Thank you, Señor Delgado, for decades of representation for Latino kids who needed role models,” tweeted a fellow puppeteer.

Born in Calexico, California, in 1940, Delgado was raised in Mexicali, Mexico, and crossed the border daily for school. He made his television debut in 1968 in Canción de la raza, the first Mexican-American soap opera. Over his career, he not only played Luis but also appeared on other notable shows like Hawaii Five-O and House of Cards, and collaborated musically with the band Pink Martini.

Delgado was also known for his activism, supporting causes such as the United Farm Workers and LGBTQ+ rights, serving on the board of the Bayard Rustin Center for Social Justice. Following his death, the organization expressed, “He will be missed, but his spirit, energy, & kindness remains with us. ¡Pa’lante!”
