Stephanie Garcia Recorded an ‘Encanto’ Song While in Labor

Every expecting parent has envisioned a worst-case scenario for the onset of labor—like their water breaking in a crowded place or enduring intense contractions stuck in traffic. But what if you’re a well-known artist recording a potential Disney hit and all you want is to wrap things up before labor kicks in? Actress Stephanie Garcia, known for her role as Mirabel in the beloved Disney film Encanto, recently shared in an interview with Variety that she was in early labor while recording the aptly titled song “Waiting on a Miracle.”
Taking a relaxed approach to the impending arrival of her child, Garcia chose to keep her condition under wraps on that particular day. “I didn’t want to tell anyone at Disney because I didn’t want to alarm anyone,” she explained to Variety. “But I was already having some contractions when we were set to record that day. I thought, ‘Well, fingers crossed I finish the song!’” How can we bottle some of that incredible calm? Garcia welcomed her daughter, Lila, the very next day. Upon discovering that Garcia was aware of her labor when recording the song, the film’s director, Byron Smith, said, “We knew she was very, very ready to have that baby. But she didn’t mention she was almost, almost ready.” Lin-Manuel Rivera, who penned the song, reportedly quipped that Garcia sang “Waiting on a Miracle” while she was waiting for a miracle of her own. It’s hard to fathom the whirlwind of emotions she must have felt belting out lyrics like, “I am ready! Come on I’m ready! / I’ve been patient and steadfast and steady!”
When she announced the arrival of her daughter in August, Garcia took to Instagram, expressing, “I’m truly in awe of the entire experience of bringing a child into this world. It is AMAZING and CHALLENGING and BEAUTIFUL and EMOTIONAL, and I can’t recall ever feeling this grateful.” Encanto had been in development for years, and by the time she recorded this song, Garcia had already completed over 15 recording sessions for the film’s dialogue alone, Smith mentioned to Variety.
Garcia’s dedication to her craft is commendable, and it makes for quite a memorable birth story. But trust us, if you’re feeling contractions, it’s perfectly acceptable to call in sick, even if you’re not entirely sure this is “it.” We’re pretty confident that had she revealed her situation at work, Disney would have had her clock out immediately. Encanto premiered in theaters and on Disney+ in November, and both kids and parents have been singing along to its catchy tunes. Several tracks have even made their way onto the Billboard Hot 100.
