Multiplatinum and Grammy award-winning artist Ryan Carter has achieved a lot throughout his career. Yet, for the first time, the pop star has joined forces with his wife, television personality and entrepreneur Danielle Carter, to create a delightful children’s book celebrating the simple joys of music and family. “There’s A Rock Concert in My Bedroom,” illustrated by Mia Stevens, follows Lily, a young girl who adores singing and playing guitar but struggles with stage fright before a school talent show. To help her, her parents and younger sister throw an impromptu rock concert at home, alleviating Lily’s anxiety and reminding everyone of the true value of music and performance.
The narrative is inspired by a genuine event from the Carters’ lives, revolving around their daughters, Clara and Zoe, who are 9 and 6. “Our girls faced a similar situation during a dance recital,” Ryan shared. “They were anxious and over-rehearsing, which took the fun out of it. So, Danielle organized a dance party in the living room, where she danced wildly, allowing them to let loose and remember the essence of having fun.” Although the book’s concept originated before 2020, the project became a pandemic endeavor for the couple, who have collaborated frequently in the past. “Everyone experiences nerves,” Danielle noted. “It’s helpful to realize you’re not alone in that. We aimed to illustrate how to enjoy the moment without feeling anxious.”
While their daughters greatly inspired the story, they were not involved in the daily creation process. Instead, they encountered the completed book as a surprise. “We thought it would be fun to reveal it to them when it was all finished,” Danielle explained. “We couldn’t wait to see their reactions when we finally held the book in our hands.” Although the characters differ from the Carter girls, the children enjoyed identifying similarities and discussing familiar toys, stuffed animals, and other details from the story.
What do Ryan and Danielle hope readers take away from their book? Danielle believes it can spark conversations with children, especially those who keep their feelings to themselves. “Seeing our daughters develop, they are both distinct,” she said. “Our elder one openly shares when she feels nervous, whereas our younger one tends to be more reserved. Books provide an opportunity to delve into their thoughts—‘Have you ever felt this way?’—and when I read to her and ask questions, she opens up.” Ryan emphasized the importance of remembering the joy in performance and art. “It’s about having a good time and acknowledging that not everything needs to be taken so seriously. Practicing and reaching goals are important, but enjoying the moment and feeling at ease is what truly matters.”
Could fans anticipate more children’s books from the Carter family? “We would love that,” says Danielle. “We definitely hope to continue. We enjoy sharing these stories based on our personal experiences as parents.”
