The photographer behind the now-famous image of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson’s daughter, Leila, has shared her insights on capturing this historic moment. In an essay for TODAY, she expressed her desire to provide representation and showcase the event from her unique perspective as a Black woman.

During Judge Jackson’s challenging Supreme Court confirmation hearings, one of the most discussed elements was the heartwarming snapshot of Leila, radiating pride as she watched her mother testify. The photographer, New York Times fellow Sarahbeth Maney, reflected on the significance of this moment and what it means for her as a Black woman. The image, which can also be found on Maney’s Twitter, encapsulates the emotions of the occasion.
“When I take photos, I aim to capture not just the visuals but the feelings behind them. I focus on intimate moments that convey the atmosphere of the hearings,” Maney wrote. “When I noticed Judge Jackson’s daughter Leila, her expression of pride and admiration struck me. It represented a hopeful glimpse into the future for young Black women.”
Maney described how she instinctively knew it was the right moment to click the shutter when she saw Leila’s proud gaze. “It was a powerful moment that gave me chills,” she said. After seeing the image circulate on social media without proper credit, a colleague urged her to share it herself. “I hesitated because the photo had already gained traction, but I ultimately decided to post it, and it took off from there,” she recounted.
Through this image, Maney hopes to inspire other Black girls to explore photography. “The field of photojournalism lacks sufficient representation of Black women, and I aspire to pave the way for more to join this profession. It can be isolating to be the only one, but I hope the future will be brighter for those who follow,” she emphasized.
