Stand-up comedian Jim Gaffigan has long been celebrated by parents for his candid and humorous take on the trials of fatherhood. As a father of five, his honesty about parenting challenges often leaves us in stitches. Now, with his kids entering their teenage years, Gaffigan has a stark realization: the teenage phase is far worse than those tumultuous baby years. He shared this unsettling insight during an appearance on CBS Sunday Morning, declaring, “It only gets worse.”
Gaffigan has often lamented the chaos of raising five little ones in his comedic routines, describing those moments as a “hell” of sorts. But he’s ready to retract those statements. “I owe an apology. I was mistaken. Totally mistaken,” he admits. “Having five young kids was a wonderful experience. I recognize that now, having five NOT so young kids, and my life is absolutely miserable.” While he delivers this with his characteristic humor, parents of teenagers can certainly relate to the underlying truth.
Reflecting on his past, Gaffigan recalls thinking, “If we could just get these kids out of diapers, everything will be easy.” He admits he was naive and didn’t fully grasp the challenges ahead. “When a stranger would tell me, ‘You’re gonna miss this!’ I thought they were just oddballs,” he jokes. “Little did I know they were issuing a warning that every sweet toddler would eventually morph into a difficult teen, exacting revenge for our own parents’ trials.”
He humorously adds, “I’m relieved I didn’t realize that every morning with not-so-young children would feel like a dramatic re-enactment of the Fall of Saigon.” He continues, “The scent of a dirty diaper seems pleasant compared to the aroma wafting from a teenage boy’s room. So, to parents of toddlers, here’s my message: It doesn’t get better. It gets worse.”
Gaffigan has been married to actress and writer Jeannie since 2003, who collaborates with him on much of his work. Together, they have two daughters and three sons, aged between 10 and 17. Their family often accompanies him on tour, and they frequently inspire his comedy. While Gaffigan’s grim outlook on the teenage years may be daunting, it’s reassuring to know that he’s navigating this turbulent phase alongside us, using humor to help us cope.
