Remember the early days of YouTube? Unlike the overwhelming mix of content that fills the platform today, YouTube a decade ago felt refreshingly innocent and simple. It was a haven for bored teens showcasing silly stunts and for budding artists sharing their creative endeavors.
Marcel the Shell With Shoes On first captured the hearts of online audiences back in 2010. This charming character, voiced by the talented Jenny Slate, brings to life a nostalgic era of YouTube that many might romanticize: quirky, genuine, and delightfully odd. Now, 12 years later, Marcel is set to star in his own feature film. This animated mockumentary will follow Marcel as he searches for his identity in the world. The stop-motion film reportedly includes an autobiographical element reflecting on themes of heartache and breakups, paralleling Slate’s relationship with her ex-husband, Dean Fleischer-Camp. The duo has collaborated on the character and storyline both prior to and after their amicable split in 2016.
Following the success of the 2010 short, they went on to create three additional shorts and two children’s books: Marcel the Shell with Shoes On: Things About Me (2011) and Marcel the Shell: The Most Surprised I’ve Ever Been (2014). In each, Slate lends her voice to the character, while Fleischer-Camp takes the director’s seat. The upcoming film, set to premiere on June 24 under A24, will also feature notable actors including Isabella Rossellini, Rosa Salazar, Thomas Mann, and Lesley Stahl—and it has already received rave reviews at various film festivals.
Since their separation, Slate has found love again with artist Jake Peterson, and together they welcomed their daughter, Lily Rose, in February 2021. While discussing her new Amazon series I Want You Back, Slate has shared that motherhood “really took me by surprise,” mentioning that she thought she would be completely absorbed by the caregiver role, but instead she feels it has allowed her to thrive creatively. She even allows her daughter to inspire her, saying, “How do I let my child’s sweetness and courage and curiosity guide me?” A little shell searching for his way in the world offers similar lessons.
