The TikTok Journey
Initially, I was quite resistant to the idea of downloading TikTok. My kids seemed endlessly absorbed by it, and I found their obsession irritating. The humor in the videos escaped me entirely, and I was determined to keep the app off my phone.
However, everything changed when my daughter suggested we try some beauty hacks she found. Though I hesitated, a text from her one evening while she was at her dad’s house changed my mind: “Can you download TikTok? I want to share some videos with you.” I realized this was a unique chance to connect with her, especially since, like many teens, she often keeps her distance.
After downloading the app, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the videos she sent me. I found myself laughing at a funny dog playing with ducks and intrigued by a viral beauty product I had never heard of. That was just over a year ago, and now watching TikTok has become a delightful way for me to bond with my teenagers.
My daughter frequently shares animal videos, beauty tutorials, and recipes with me. We’ve cooked together using ideas from TikTok, turning our kitchen time into precious moments of togetherness. We often go to the beauty supply store to pick up new makeup and hair products inspired by our TikTok finds.
My two sons jumped on the bandwagon as soon as they learned I had the app. Their humor is different; they send me funny videos about moms that often hit too close to home, along with suggestions for products they’d like. One memorable example was when my oldest showed me a satisfying clip of a guy washing his car, which led me to buy him a power washer.
My sons also share practical life hacks through TikTok. One of my favorite tips was for preventing my windshield from icing over during winter using dish soap or hand sanitizer. It’s a sweet reminder that they care about my safety, even if they sometimes act like I’m more of a nuisance than a parent. As soon as I got the soap, my son eagerly helped wash my car.
I receive a stream of TikTok notifications throughout the day; between my kids, it’s about ten a day. However, I often wait until they ask, “Mom, do you want to watch TikToks?” Then we gather on the sofa for a marathon viewing session.
This shared experience not only brings us closer but also gives me insight into their lives. Without the app, I would miss out on this connection. It makes them happy too, feeling that I’m interested in what they enjoy. While TikTok can sometimes feel like an alien world for parents, visiting it with my teens is a rewarding experience.
There are moments when my teens are uncommunicative, but sharing laughter over a TikTok video fosters connection. Even if it’s just a brief clip, it helps bridge the gap between us.
