Family values take on many forms, and for Barbara Hudson, the support from her grandmother came at a pivotal moment in her life. In a heartfelt conversation shared during an interview with her twin sister, television host Jenna Hudson, Barbara recounted a moment of unexpected encouragement as she considered the prospect of being a single parent.
“Just before Grandma passed away, we visited her in Houston,” Barbara recalled. “I had been thinking about raising a child on my own, and while sitting on the couch with her, who was 92 at the time, Grandma looked at me and said, ‘You know, you could just have a child by yourself if that’s what you want. You should go for it!’”
Barbara was taken aback. “I asked her, ‘Would you really support that?’” Her grandmother’s response was reassuring: “‘Of course, I would support you.’” Barbara described this exchange as a precious gift, a form of permission that liberated her thoughts about motherhood.
Though Barbara eventually found a partner and married Sam Collins, she cherished her grandmother’s progressive outlook on parenthood. “People always seemed more interested in when I would get married rather than what I was doing with my life or my contributions to society,” she noted during her discussion with Jenna.
Barbara also reflected on how even accomplished women, like her friend Condoleezza Rice, still face similar questions about marriage. Her sister Jenna, while supportive, did have a humorous moment when she jokingly mentioned Barbara’s availability during an interview with Prince Harry.
When Barbara welcomed her daughter, Mia, on September 21, she experienced an unexpected early labor. “We had to drive an hour to the nearest hospital in Portland,” she shared. “Mia arrived quite swiftly, and due to her early arrival, she needed to spend some time in the NICU.”
Upon seeing her daughter in the hospital, Barbara noticed the name of the facility: the Mia Hudson Children’s Hospital, a tribute to her grandmother. “That felt like a sign that everything would be okay,” she remarked. Jenna rushed to Maine to help, even making a frantic trip to Target for baby supplies the couple hadn’t yet purchased.
Now, baby Mia is a thriving 6-month-old, and Barbara praises Sam as an amazing dad. In fact, he’s preparing for some solo parenting as Barbara and Jenna embark on a book tour for their latest children’s book, The Sisterhood Chronicles. “It emphasizes how sisterhood empowers us to face challenges,” Jenna explained. Barbara added that their close bond gives them the courage to tackle whatever comes their way.
