The Florida Department of Education has unveiled excerpts from math textbooks that were rejected due to content considered inappropriate, including critical race theory and other themes.
Recently, the department announced the rejection of 41% of submitted textbooks, sparking discussions about transparency since no specific examples were initially provided. However, on Friday, four instances of “prohibited” content were shared. The Department clarified that these examples were sourced from public submissions and do not encompass the complete range of input received.
Examples of Banned Content
One example presented is a bar graph illustrating levels of Implicit Association, a method used to gauge racial biases. Another example associated with this graph refers to the Implicit Association Test, highlighting that over 2 million individuals have participated in an online version of it.
Additionally, a snippet from a rejected textbook outlines a learning goal where “students develop social awareness by practicing empathy towards classmates.” The final example, which includes a censored term, aims to foster student agency by emphasizing “students’ social and emotional learning.”
The department did not identify the specific textbooks or provide deeper context for these instances. In June 2021, the Florida Board of Education implemented an amendment prohibiting the teaching of critical race theory, defined by the department as the idea that racism is ingrained in American society and its legal systems to maintain white supremacy.
National Trends
States like Missouri, Idaho, and Tennessee have followed Florida’s lead, enacting legislation to ban critical race theory in education. Currently, 35 states have either passed laws or proposed restrictions against teaching this concept. Notably, only one publisher, Accelerate Learning, has been approved for K-5 mathematics materials. This Houston-based company was acquired by the Carlyle Group in 2018, during which Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin was co-CEO. Youngkin’s first act as governor was to eliminate inherently divisive concepts, akin to Florida’s “Stop WOKE Act.”
