In a candid discussion on the podcast “Perelel Lives,” former reality star and entrepreneur Lily Harper shares her experiences of motherhood and the emotional challenges that come with it. After welcoming her now 4-year-old son, Noah, Lily admits she felt as though she had lost her sense of self. “Am I just a new person now?” she pondered during her conversation with host Emma Collins. Reflecting on the journey, she recalled advice from a friend that it takes about a year to feel like yourself again, but that the new version of you would be even better. “You’ve created a new life, and it’s an adjustment,” she noted, emphasizing that it took her about a year to reconnect with herself.
Lily highlighted that while many prepare expectant mothers for the joys of parenting, the discussions often overlook the realities of postpartum challenges and the struggle to adapt to a new identity. “Women tend to share just enough to help each other prepare,” she said. “It’s a strange game we play because we know it’s worth it, yet we don’t always share the tougher parts.”
With a recognition of her privilege in being able to work from home and spend time with her kids, Lily also expressed a controversial perspective on taking time for oneself. “I’m completely okay with being away from my children for a few days,” she shared. “It’s important to step back sometimes to reconnect with who you are outside of being a parent.” She recounted her pre-pandemic trips to New York, where she balanced work and leisure, finding value in those brief escapes.
Lily and her partner, Mark, have chosen to have two children and feel fulfilled as a family of four. Although she acknowledges that many women tend to forget the more difficult aspects of pregnancy, she made an effort to savor every moment with her second child. “Knowing this would be our last time made it easier,” she said. “I wasn’t one of those people who loved being pregnant, but even through the challenges, I found comfort in knowing this was it for me.”
Lily’s honest reflections resonate deeply, offering a refreshing reminder that while motherhood is both beautiful and challenging, it can significantly impact one’s sense of identity.
