A recent survey reveals a significant hesitancy among parents regarding COVID-19 vaccinations for their young children. Despite the long wait for a vaccine approval for kids under 5, only 18% of parents express an eagerness to vaccinate their children as soon as it’s available. The latest Vaccine Monitor survey from the Kaiser Family Foundation indicates that nearly two times as many parents, 38%, prefer to wait and observe how the vaccine performs in others before making a decision.
About a quarter of parents (27%) are firmly against vaccinating their children, and another 11% indicate they will only do so if required. A majority of parents (over 50%) voiced concerns about not having adequate information regarding the vaccine’s safety and effectiveness for this age group. This hesitancy could hinder efforts toward vaccine mandates or achieving herd immunity among children. Compounding the issue, many children have fallen behind on their routine vaccinations during the pandemic.
Masking in Schools
The survey also explored other COVID-related topics, such as masking in schools. Currently, less than 20% of parents report that their child’s school enforces a mask mandate, a sharp decline from 70% in September. Notably, Black and Hispanic parents are nearly three times more likely than White parents to report that their child typically wears a mask at school. While 84% of parents feel their child is at least somewhat safe from COVID-19 at school, a stark difference exists between Black and White parents—52% of White parents feel safe compared to only 32% of Black parents.
As the possibility of a vaccine for children under 5 looms, it’s evident that there’s significant work ahead in rebuilding trust in our health and education systems.
