As I reflect on the reasons behind my blogging journey, it sparks a fascinating conversation about the evolution of self-expression. Unlike you, who embrace writing in journals, I recall my own childhood diary entries filled with simple musings like “Dear Dairy, we had peas again” or “Dear Dairy, Scott likes me.” Ironically, I misspelled ‘diary’ throughout the entire year. How could I share my true feelings when I was addressing a dairy?
You asked me recently why I choose to blog rather than keep my thoughts private in a journal, and that’s an insightful inquiry. Think back to our childhood diaries, safely locked away and hidden under pillows and in drawers. Today, my thoughts are out in the open for anyone to read. It’s a strange concept, but I assure you, my blog isn’t a reflection of my deepest emotions. Those remain locked in my heart, accessible only to me.
I acknowledge there are days when I would prefer to delete everything and walk away. I found many blank pages in my childhood diaries, which leaves me wondering if my silence would prompt you to question why I chose not to write. Life was happening, but sometimes words escaped me or I was simply too busy.
So, dear children, here’s why I blog:
- I want to create a record of your childhood. I may never complete elaborate scrapbooks or fill baby books, but this blog, along with thousands of photos, will serve as a cherished archive for you someday.
- Motherhood can be isolating, and writing helps me communicate my thoughts and feelings, even if it’s just for myself, providing a sense of connection.
- The internet has introduced me to remarkable people, allowing me to form friendships and support networks that have enriched my life.
- I wish for you to know me beyond the role of ‘mom.’ I’m not the best verbal storyteller, and I want to ensure you grasp who I am without regrets about unanswered questions when you reach adulthood.
- Remembering the little moments is crucial. Without writing them down, I fear they’ll fade. From your first steps to amusing occurrences like last night when Clara played rock-paper-scissors with the cats, these memories matter.
- Even if my jokes don’t land with you, perhaps someone else might find them amusing. It’s worth sharing with a wider audience.
- Writing brings me joy; it stimulates my mind and keeps me engaged. I aspire to continue writing for as long as I can.
With love,
Mom
