In recent years, there seems to have been a rise in categorizing mothers into specific parenting styles. Whether it’s Natural Parenting, Attachment Parenting, or Gentle Parenting, many moms wear these labels like badges of honor. But why is there this need to define ourselves so rigidly? More importantly, what if you don’t quite fit into any of these categories?

Trying to find a parenting label can feel like shopping for jeans—endless tries and none that fit perfectly. Some pairs may hug your hips but are too tight around the waist, while others may be too short. The same can be said for the labels we encounter in motherhood. Am I doing something wrong if I don’t conform?

For instance, I exclusively breastfeed, which might categorize me as a natural parent. I co-sleep, suggesting I’m an attachment parent. But my family dynamic is unique; my children don’t share the same father, and my partner and I aren’t married. Does this make me a “trash mama” or an “alt mama”? The labels can feel constricting and judgmental.

I admit, I also have my own parenting quirks. I’ve spanked my older kids, I own firearms, and one year, I gifted my child a BB gun (a Red Ryder, to be specific!). I express frustration, I sometimes yell, and I have moments where I break down in the shower. I’ve even been known to surprise my kids with a water hose while they’re playing outside. Yet, I also cherish the moments when they come in from play, hot and sweaty, and smelling divine.

Ultimately, why can’t we just embrace the role of being a mom without the cliques and categories? I’ve never fit into those high school niches, and I don’t want to now. I’m confident that I’m doing things my way, and my kids are thriving. You probably are too.
