In my journey through life, I have come to realize that there is so much I still have to learn. However, I believe I possess a certain understanding—sometimes.
What I lack is the experience of having a child. As I faced the reality of impending parenthood, I acknowledged that my life was about to change dramatically. My partner and I delved into parenting books, often laughing at our naivety. I endured discomfort, knowing that each moment of hardship was fortifying our unborn child. My partner wore a smile while resting his hand on my belly, feeling our future family growing within. The ultrasounds we saw were both awe-inspiring and humbling; they presented a glimpse of life that felt out of our grasp. We worried about finances, daycare arrangements, and deliberated over baby names, all while rearranging our plans from carefree beach days to preparing a nursery and diligently taking prenatal vitamins.
We grappled with the heart-wrenching reality that the life we hoped for was not meant to be, as we faced the loss of our pregnancy far too early. Accepting that our little creation couldn’t find its heartbeat was excruciating, yet this experience solidified our desire for parenthood. Losing that first glimmer of hope ultimately strengthened our commitment to love and nurture the next child. The anticipation of the next pregnancy fills us with hope and excitement; we are ready and waiting to shower that child with love.
Contentment is another feeling I am learning to embrace. Throughout my life, I was driven by the pursuit of achievement—striving to be the best, the most knowledgeable, and the most articulate. This self-imposed pressure was burdensome and counterproductive. I often overlooked the small, meaningful moments in favor of chasing the next goal. Now, as I reflect on my thirty years, I realize how many experiences I wish I had fully appreciated in the moment, rather than relegating them to mere memories. I was always racing toward the next milestone—be it education, career, or relationships—losing sight of what truly mattered.
In the metaphorical marathon of life, I focused solely on reaching the finish line, neglecting to acknowledge the journey that shaped me. It’s easy to forget the struggles endured along the way while reveling in the accolades of success. Our minds tend to remember achievements, but our hearts hold onto the defining moments, the challenges that shaped our character. It is those moments of vulnerability that foster resilience, pushing us to continue navigating life’s complexities.
What I do know is that I am surrounded by family—something many individuals yearn for. My mother embodies unconditional love; her happiness is inherently tied to mine. For too long, I took this for granted. Despite my aspirations to be a good mother, I am aware that I will inevitably stumble. My mother provided me with the tools to navigate life’s challenges, always ready to catch me if I falter. She is the one who holds my hand in difficult times and understands when to step back, allowing my partner to take the lead.
Speaking of my partner, he is a source of unwavering support. He embodies a love that manifests not through grand gestures but in the quiet moments we share. When faced with distressing news, he looks to me—not for reassurance, but for guidance. His instinct is to shield me from pain, to process difficult information before it reaches me. This bond we share is strengthened by my mother’s trust in him, a bond built on mutual understanding and respect.
Life often unfolds in unexpected ways, defying our plans and desires. It presents a series of moments—some joyful, some painful—that shape who we are. We become who we are meant to be, not merely who we dreamed of becoming. In my family, we are defined by unconditional love.
That is what I know—for now.
